Which type of phone system is right for my organization?

There are three basic types of phone systems available today. At the smaller end are “Key” systems. In a Key system, handsets connect directly to a central unit which provides call control and basic features such as voicemail. Key systems typically fit organizations with 20 or less employees who need basic phone system functions.

Private Branch Exchange (PBX) systems are for organizations with more than 20 employees who require additional phone system functions such as auto-attendant features, call routing, and call center abilities. With PBX systems the handsets connect directly to a call processor which handles the calls.

Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) systems can be used by organizations of all sizes. VoIP systems also have a central call processing unit but the handsets do not connect directly to the call processor. Voice conversations are turned into data packets that are sent to the call processor through the data network. One advantage with VoIP systems is that as a data packet, voice conversations can be routed anywhere there is a data connection.
